Mentor Feedback:

Mentor Observation 2011

This observation was completed by my mentor, Dr. David Shew, after observing me teaching a laboratory for the undergraduate course, Principles of Plant Pathology (PP 315):

PP 315 Fall 2011 Observation

I reviewed my own performance for this class and my reflection is below.

My Reflections

1.  What did you feel went well in this class session?

I felt like this session went well, although the material was difficult for some students to follow.

2.  What would you like to change about this class session if you had to teach it again?

I would like to present the material in a different manner. I think that including more questions and allowing the students to use clickers to answer would help keep the group motivated and engaged.

3.  In the light of the observer’s comments, what aspects of your teaching approach will you look at changing in the future?  How will you do this?

In the future I would like to be more confident about lecture material presented before the lab experiments and present without making my voice rise or trail off at the end of each slide. I think I could improve by spending more time on lab objectives, why they are important and summarizing our results. I also want to include more self-assessments, so I know how the students feel about my teaching during the semester.

4.  What have you found useful/not so useful about the observation process?

I think the observation process is very useful and I think it could be improved if more people were there to observe my teaching. I think this is something I will try and arrange in the future.
